When you walk around the Prep campus, there is one person who is consistently joyful. No matter the weather, what day of the week it is, or the time of the school day, there is always a smile across his face. That man is senior, Yafet Teamrat.
Yafet has made a small but far-reaching impact on the Prep community during his tenure. He has been a three-sport athlete, retreat leader, and uplifting presence to all, no matter where you meet Yafet, everyone can agree on one thing, his energy and positivity are impossible to miss.
While often on the field or in the pool, Yafet’s athletic involvement goes far past his performances. He is also known for his leadership and constant encouraging attitude towards teammates. “He was a pillar of our team community,” said former lacrosse teammate Luke Saab ’28.
Yafet also made a significant impact on his underclassmen peers through his experience as a retreat leader. He led the freshman retreat for the class of 2028 and his group member, William Leith ’28, described him as, “someone who could always put a smile on my face, he always displayed a perfect mix of maturity and leadership, but also always knew how to lighten the mood and make everyone laugh.”
Even in small moments, like during passing period or sitting in the library during window, Yafet is seen constantly making others laugh, greeting others by name, and making sure everyone he sees is doing well. “Yafet is very intentional and does a great job of talking to everyone, even if they are not his best friends,” Mrs. Lovejoy said. Additionally, he has an excellent memory for remembering names and faces. The librarians tested him last him last year and said, “he knew everyone in his class”.
However, Yafet says that this isn’t as purposeful as many think. He attributes his kind personality to the support system of students and teachers at Prep, which he said has “almost become a second family to him.” He stated that he doesn’t care much about being remembered as an individual by students and teachers, but rather about the message he sends to those around him: “To be nice to others, as it doesn’t hurt to be good to people.”
Yafet’s enrichment of the Prep community is not just about him as a person, but a culmination of every intentional and genuine action he performs. His impact is not defined by one role or activity, but by the consistent way he makes others feel seen, valued, and appreciated.
