The ‘136th Annual’ Spirit Week Spelling Bee began with a qualifying round featuring collegios from every grade along with faculty competitors. Lined up by age, students stepped up to test their spelling skills. In a rare start, every freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and faculty member passed the first round. As Ms. Freeman noted, it “might be the first time everyone has made it through the first round.”

The second round quickly narrowed the field. Freshmen were eliminated one after another, with ASB member Joe Maskill joking that the “freshmen [were] dropping like flies.” By the end of the round, the freshmen were out of the competition.

Upperclassmen continued to battle through difficult words. Faculty Team member Mr. Kiehn stayed strong with the word questionnaire, while Marquette and Regis Collegios became the last sophomore collegios remaining. Marquette spelled entrepreneur correctly. Rahner represented the juniors deep into the tie-breaker round before being eliminated on the word idiosyncrasy. Meanwhile the seniors did not misspelled a single word, earning them a place in the all-school finals. Marquette secured second place, going into the finals in front of the whole school by confidently spelling onomatopoeia, while Kiehn eventually fell after missing the words diarrhea and pharaoh.

The final round took place today during the Spirit Week assembly in front of the entire school, where Marquette, Regis and the Seniors  competed for the championship. In the end, the seniors took home the Spirit Week Spelling Bee victory.
