Prep-ing for Next Year

Leeds Rising, Staff Writer

While most Seattle Prep students leave either in June or late May; done with the year’s schoolwork and happy to have the upcoming summer, some Prep students stay to complete more courses through the Seattle Prep summer school. Summer classes at Prep offer academic enrichment, or athletic programs.

One of the summer classes, focuses on reading an assigned summer reading book for incoming Juniors. The book is discussed as a class with the insightful help of a scholarly teacher, but also is done at a pace that allows further depth into the reading. At the end of each summer reading course, the class takes their summer reading test that would normally be taken at the beginning of the school year.
There are a variety of classes that help students get prepared for high school or college. One class, entitled Smart But Scattered, helps students organize themselves and their study skills. For incoming 12th graders, Prep offers classes designed to help you through the college application process including an SAT Prep class, College Essay Writing class, and a class that helps students navigate the tricky Common Application for Colleges.
Other summer classes allow students to find an easier time with their upcoming math curriculum. Teaching introductory classes in fields such as geometry, pre-calculus, algebra and algebra two, students who take the class are given help with the material they will receive the following year. Most students who take this class have an easier time with the upcoming year’s coursework due to their prior experiences with the subject matter.
Departing from more traditional summer school classes, summer school at Prep also offers a variety of sports and co-curricular camps and classes including sports such as Baseball, Basketball, Cross-Country, and Football. Additionally, there is a Musical Theater Workshop and PULSE Dance Team offers a training camp for interested students.
Seattle Prep’s summer programs allow students to prepare for the following school year in a less stressful environment and gives students an opportunity to explore extra-curriculars. Any student who utilizes their summer school time well is sure to feel rewarded as the upcoming fall semester approaches.
