Seattle Prep has a new ASB president for the 2014-2015 year; junior Siena Jeakle. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

gathered in the gym on Monday, April 14 to witness the candidate speeches of this year’s ASB contestants, before casting votes on their top four choices. The crowds were kept entertained by the candidates’ humorous, insightful, and informative speeches, covering a variety of school-related topics and self-compliments. The four winners: Siena Jeakle, Patrick Grady, Roy Matthew, and Patrick Boyle each gave excellent speeches.

Jeakle associated herself with the student body by describing her connection with each grade. Grady described his unique attributes such as one of his many titles “the guy with the big shoes,” accompanied by a high-kick to display said shoes. Matthew ensured Prep that he was no longer “the Boy” for Prep but was now “The Man.” And Boyle described his affinity for the superhero “Dash” and assured Prep that he would be a caring president. All four eventual winners’ speeches were very humorous and informative, and inspired students to cast a ballot in each of their favors before leaving the gym. Though the ultimate winners were all Juniors, there was also a number of Sophomores, and a single Freshman candidate in the running, Marnel Ramirez, who many commended for his bravery, but failed to get the votes in the end.

The race for an ASB position truly began a week before the elections with the hanging of candidacy posters around campus. Each of the winning executives got an early start on this with effective and enticing posters including a wide variety of approaches to the situation. Patrick Grady promised for a “cheetahlicious” presidency, including an image of himself in a “cheetahlicious” outfit, and also coined the phrase: “Don’t be shady, vote for Grady.” Roy Matthew’s: “Roy is cool,” poster depicted him walking away from an impressive explosion with the caption “cool guys don’t look at explosions,” and another advertised his martial arts skill, declaring: “Vote for Roy, he’s almost a black-belt.” Patrick Boyle’s posters promised a “refreshing” presidency, depicting him all decked out in swimming gear, and holding a refreshing beverage. And Siena Jeakle’s posters employed key phrases such as “Don’t be square, vote Siena for ASB,” displayed on a circular poster, and the sarcastic: “Vote Siena for ABS.”

There was a surprisingly large number of students in the running this year, adding up to a total of 11 candidates, each performing admirably. Although the four ASB executives have already been chosen, the individual grade executives have yet to be announced, and are possible positions for the remaining students in the running. Many of the unselected candidates will move on to run in these elections, making for a promising outlook on next year’s student leadership.
