Students Debate Trump v. Hillary

Quinn Losse and Abby Arthur

As the presidential election is finally coming to a close, two sophomores, Liam McNett and Max Heid, were interviewed and asked the same exact questions to discuss the controversies and qualifications of the candidate they support. McNett is a strong Hillary Clinton supporter, while Heid is more in favor of Donald Trump.

McNett supports Hillary Clinton because of how knowledgable she is and because of her constant involvement in politics. He believes that because she has spent her 30 years in public service fighting for children through the Children’s Defense Fund, creating health care of 8 million children, and serving as the United States Secretary of State, she is the perfect candidate. McNett stated that he thinks “she is the most experienced presidential candidate that the country has ever seen.”

Regarding the locker talk on Trump’s part, McNett thinks that it was something nobody should ever have to hear: “It is sexist, immoral, and wrong. It is nothing that any person, let alone the possible President of the United States, should be saying.”

On the defensive side, McNett talked about Hillary’s emails and how she took responsibility for what she did. McNett said that realized it was a mistake and was willing to own up to that.

McNett thinks that Hillary is qualified because of her years of public service, being the First Lady, the Senator of New York, and much more. He believes this experience has “given her a close view of what a President will look like” and that she would make a great President.

Heid lives in a family where all of his close relatives are strong Donald Trump supporters and love what Trump is trying to do for our country. Heid is not as extreme in his confidence of Trump as his parents are, however he agrees with his financial policies and ideas that will help America get back on its feet and out of debt.

Heid didn’t hesitate in saying that he disagrees with Trump’s social aspects, so when talking about the locker room talk, he said it “probably shouldn’t have been said and was uncalled for” as he believes that Trump “doesn’t really have a filter.”

On Hillary’s part, he said that she is not taking full responsibility for her actions regarding the emails.

When asked why he believes Trump is qualified, Heid said, “I don’t know if he is fully qualified to be president.” Heid said this because Donald Trump is not a politician, but a businessman and he thinks that that is exactly what our country is in need of right now.

Both McNett and Heid urge eligible students to vote. McNett said that others should vote for Hillary because she is going to fight for others and give them a voice as she has spent her whole adult life doing so, while Heid said that people should vote for Donald Trump because of his ideas on illegal immigration and taxes. Their insights are something that should be taken into account when deciding who to vote for.
