As we continue through the holiday season at Prep, sports teams across campus embrace the chance to build community in ways that go beyond their weekly competition. From festive outings to long-standing team traditions, winter becomes a time for athletes to connect, celebrate, and strengthen their bonds.
For the crew team, the classic game of “White Elephant” has become a cherished part of their winter routine. “Last year we went to the Enchant ice-skating rink, had an ugly sweater competition, and everyone bought a funny gift for the white elephant exchange,” Ferullo ’26 said. “At the end of the night you pick a number and whatever number you get is the order you draw for the presents,” she added.
For a sport that demands intense physical activity throughout the winter with long, cold, practices and hard conditioning, this activity serves an important purpose. “It is something that really brings the team together, especially during the winter season. It can be very hard to keep pushing during the harder months,” Ferullo said.
This fun holiday activity also helps to integrate the younger athletes into the team culture. “We include the freshmen as well, which is nice because we don’t really spend a lot of time with them during the regular season,” Ferullo mentioned. These opportunities help to strengthen the team as a whole.
For the Seattle Prep golf team, the annual Christmas banquet is always a favorite. The team gathers for dinner and celebrates with a lively awards ceremony. Similar to crew, the golf team also participates in a white elephant gift exchange. “It’s a great bonding opportunity since the team loves to mix hard work with lots of fun,” said Sofia Wingert ’26.
Beyond the gifts and celebration, the banquet maintains team culture through the off-season. “The banquet helps to build a sense of community, especially when we aren’t in season, because we are able to stay connected with our coaches and teammates, which is super special.” Wingert ’26 added.
Whether it’s ice-skating, white elephant, or a banquet filled with delicious food, these moments of celebration help Prep athletes stay motivated and connected. For these teams, these activities are more than just fun; they are a meaningful part of what makes their program feel like a family.
