10 consecutive metro league triumphs, 24 straight victories, the Seattle Prep boys golf team has not lost a match in over two years. While some teams would crack under the mounting pressure that comes with such a long winning streak, the golf team has got it down to a tee.
As explained by Coach Quitlong, the team’s secret to success lies in their emphasis on improving the mental game. Quitlong said, “The game of golf is a tough mental sport. Learning to stay composed under pressure, bounce back from a bad shot, and trusting the swing takes time.”
When asked about dealing with the expectations that come with a win streak, Frank Dixon ‘26 said, “we’re more focused on just winning every single match. Every match, we start 0 and 0, and we just want to get to 1 and 0. We focus on getting the win, and avoid thinking about anything other than that.”
“If anything, the win streak almost empowers us to do our best because we’re not nervous because we know that we can win, and that we should win,” agreed Gordon McDowall ‘27.
In addition to the team’s strong mental game, Dixon attributed team chemistry as another factor to their success: “Going back to two and a half years ago, we’ve always had strong team camaraderie. We work well together and we’re able to focus on the task at hand.”
Coach Quitlong reiterated this saying, “this year’s squad stands out because of how connected they are as a team. They push each other in practice and support each other on and off the course, which creates a competitive but positive environment.”
The team’s close-knit nature is in part due to the strong leadership brought back from last year. Coach Quitlong said, “the return of all 5 players from our May 2025 State Team has been crucial in setting the tone for the team. That leadership has raised everyone’s game.”
Dixon said, “A state win is possible, but we got to go out there and play to the best of our abilities every game, and make sure we don’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Coach Quitlong has more ambitions for this year’s squad than just keeping the streak going saying, “Moving forward, our expectation is to keep that momentum going and put ourselves in position to contend at every level of Metro League, SeaKing District, and State”
