A mysterious invitation. A party full of strange guests. A shocking murder that leaves everyone suspect. That’s right, the iconic board game turned stage production is here as Prep’s very own murder mystery: Clue.
The international success of Clue has inspired high schools across the country, including Prep, to perform the fast-paced, funny, and highly entertaining whodunnit thriller.
“It’s such a fun show to do, and on our stage, it’s going to play really well” Mr. Othman, head of the theater program, said. “It’s the type of show that has appeal to both my generation as well as the younger generation, because it’s got such a huge following. When I was a kid, I played the board game.”
The Clue cast had the unique experience of seeing Clue tour at the Fifth Avenue Theater and later meeting Sandy Rustin, the director who adapted Clue into a stage play, via Zoom to learn more about the play, ask questions, and delve into each character’s motives.
“It was really cool because she gave us backstory into the characters” Jack Barker ’27, playing Mr. Boddy, said. “It helped with how I perceived my character, and I think it helped a lot of other people too.”
“I love the show because there’s not a lead, it’s ensemble based” Mr. Othman explained. “You have your core group of eight characters that are on stage most of the time, going through the house trying to solve this mystery.”
Prep’s Clue cast is small but mighty. With fifteen actors total, each character is unique, and it is crucial for each person to uncover their character’s personality to create an authentic theater experience for the audience.
“Mr. Green, he’s an anxious dude. People who know me say I’m energetic. I tried to channel that energetic part of myself into a more nervous energy” Joe Maskill ’26 said about how he ties his personality into his character. “Every role an actor takes on, you’ll see themselves in it. Everyone interprets lines and character traits differently. You learn about yourself in the character.”
Clue opens Friday night on October 25th in Seattle Prep’s Father Healy Theater. Those seeking to solve the riddle can also see the play on Saturday, October 26th and Saturday, November 2nd.
The only question remaining is: Whodunnit?
