As Prep students returned to school last month, many were pleasantly surprised to see the cafeteria and commons offering new lunch items! The new additions of a Mexican Cold Brew, Club Sandwich, and Rice Krispy Treat provide students more options to decide what to eat for lunch.
Kenyetta Carter, the Executive Chef of the Smith Family Café, and staff made the decision to add these new items. According to students, the most popular new item is the Mexican Cold Brew.
“The school used to have a coffee cart running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday” Carter said. “But it wasn’t very popular, and we wasted a lot of coffee, so we got rid of it. But lately a caffeinated drink had been highly requested by many, so we brought in something new.”
The Club Sandwich addition was inspired by one of the kitchen staff’s meals during the summer. On her vacation, she had “the best club sandwich she’s ever had,” and pitched Carter the idea of adding a new, delicious, sandwich to the menu. Carter responded, “I personally love a club sandwich, sure we’ll put it on the menu!”
Finally, the Rice Krispy Treat inspiration came from the Prep Open House that is held at the start of each year. “We originally only served them at the Open House, but everyone was telling me how good they were, so we just decided to make them a full-time thing.”
These new additions have drawn a lot of attention, with many great reviews being left.
“I like that they added it because it is good for people in the mornings who need caffeine to get through their early morning classes” Lucy Dillon ‘27 said. “Also, the majority of people at Prep like Starbucks, so for people who don’t have the time to go before school, it’s easy to grab one of these in the Commons and be set for the day.”
Make sure to stop on by the Smith Café Cafeteria, Commons, or Great Room to try out these new additions for yourself!
