Olympic Week is full of fun, community, and competition, and throughout this week ASB is hard at work prepping, planning, and preparing. What is the work that goes on behind the scenes?
Planning starts early January right after winter break. Senior ASB executive Blen Assegid said, “Seniors specifically focus on Olympic trials, getting seniors into positions they actually want to do and things like small events and assigning teachers and coaches to head those events.”
Everyone has a job, from deciding what events to do, to drawing the Olympic Week event backets, to organizing events. The four seniors on the executive team meet on Tuesdays, and the whole ASB team on Wednesdays to discuss and plan the week.
ASB Adviser Ms. Lovejoy described what gets discussed in the meeting, “The four execs looked at the events last year and had conversations about the events that happen every year, which ones went well, and which ones didn’t”. Then they take the finalized events to the whole group and discuss where they can place events, whether they have space for all the events, and the availability of supervisors of those events.
Lovejoy described certain restrictions on events; “There are some constraints, we don’t have fields that are easy to get to, we don’t have tennis courts, and we have limited gym space even though we have Merlino this year, and the stage space is also limited”. During the brainstorming process there are all sorts of ideas on what the new events should be, and “the whole ASB group talks about what they want but also the logistics.”
With Olympic Week this week, all the ASB work is on show for the school. Roll Prep!
