Prep’s drama program is about to have another hit with their latest production of The Taming of the Shrew. The story is traditionally set in Italy and it’s centered around a young rich man named Lucentio who comes to the city to study at a university. His intentions change however after he sees a young woman named Bianca and falls in love with her. However, Bianca already has two suitors named Gremio and Hortensio and Bianca’s father has already stated that no one can plan to marry Bianca until her mean older sister Katherine has married. Later on, a gold digger named Petruchio comes into the picture who is interested in marrying Katherine. The play centers around disguises and a bit of deceit in order to find out who ends up with Katherine and Bianca, if anyone does. After expressing his love and excitement for the upcoming musical, here is what Mr. Othman had to say:
AL: What is different in Prep’s adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew?
AO: William Shakespeare created plays and characters that are relatable and timeless. Over the centuries, his plays have been adapted to various locations, keeping the same language and characters. Our production takes place in the Appalachian Mountains of America. This has helped us take Shakespeare characters recreate them in a modern form, adding a new level of comedy to this already brilliant play.
AL: What was your favorite part about directing this play?
AO: The thing I love about being a director is the transformation and growth I see from my actors throughout the rehearsal process. We created a shared vision of the characters and seeing them artistically develop from our first rehearsal to performances always amazing me. Also, I am a huge fan of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is a challenge for every actor and director, but once you work though the language you have some of the best dialogue and moments written for the stage.
AL: What is your favorite part in the play?
AO: This play has it all. Of course I’m always a fan of the slapstick humor and the servant roles and comedy bits in the play are hilarious. But, the play also has some incredibly witty dialogue between Petruchio and Kate creating one of the greatest courting scenes ever written.
AL: Any other comments on the play that you’d like Prep to know about beforehand?
AO: I realize Shakespeare can be a difficult sell, especially to high school students, but I know when you see these lines brilliantly acted by your friends and classmates, you will discover Shakespeare’s greatness. I am so proud of our theatre program at Seattle Prep. One of the reasons it is so exceptional is because of the talent, dedication and passion these young actors and crew members have to create incredible theatre.
This play sounds like it is going to be one of the best plays Seattle Prep has ever had! The play runs through November 8 in the Healy Theater.
