On October 13, the Lady Panthers took on the Lakeside Lions. Not only was the game a Girls Night Out, where all girl fall-sport players are offered the opportunity to watch the game and receive a free t-shirt, but it was also a CYO night. CYO is when 3rd through 8th graders from all across the Seattle area join a Prep game to help determine if they would like to go to Prep in the future. This CYO night, the Varsity Volleyball team offered the youth and their families a fun night free of charge (t-shirts included!).
The night started out with captains, Milou Haskin (’15) and Kate Bubar (’15) leading the team in warm ups. Afterward, the Ladies completed their pre game rituals. Tessa Winkelhake (’16) stated, “Before every game, we sit down and say an individual and team goal”. They also do a ‘get down’, where everyone on the team dances to pump themselves up before the game.
To open the game, Sophomore, Chinwe Ezeonu sang the National Anthem. The starters of this volleyball game were Bubar, Haskin, Winkelhake, Veronica Gubelmen (’16), Allison Wilson (’17), Jana Zisette (’16), and Ellie Komen (’15). Komen was the libero of the game, the player who stands in the back of the court and can come on and off without the need of a sub-in.
The Lady Panthers ended up losing to the Lions 3-2, however won their most recent games against Holy Names and Eastside Catholic. Wilson, the only Sophomore on the team stated, “We have a lot of heart and passion for the game, and have learned to show it through our play”.
The team is currently 5th in the State, won 3rd in Metros and will compete in districts for a chance to go to state this weekend.
