This year, Seattle Prep has the privilege of welcoming two new girls’ cross-country coaches: Aimee Corr and Katy Covert!
Corr and Covert started the season off with a bang, expressing their kindness and dedication in their first few weeks as members of the coaching staff.
Junior Team Captain Teagan Rain described both new coaches as “really nice.” She explained that each coach brought a distinct kind of support to the team. As an example, she described Corr as “motherly” due to her caring nature. She also shared that Covert, as a staff member, can understand the various levels of homework runners may have.
Head Coach Corr has been coaching cross country for five years and weaving her community-based principles into her coaching style along the way.
Recently, the team participated in a bonding activity in which each runner removed their shoe and placed it in a pile. They were then asked to grab a random shoe and find the owner. Upon finding the owner each runner was instructed to declare, “I’ve got your shoe.”
To anyone else this phrase may seem silly, however, to the girls’ cross-country team it has come to mean something more.
To have someone’s shoe is to support them, to be there for them, and to be a good teammate.
Coach Katy to some, Ms. Covert to others, is a new assistant coach and college counselor. She has been a cross country and track coach since 2017 and is excited to see the team grow and challenge themselves throughout the season.
When asked to give new runners advice, Coach Katy advised “Consistency is everything! You are going to be uncomfortable, you are going to have some aches and pains, and you are going to wonder if you can do it. Just stay consistent, put in the miles, and you will notice yourself getting stronger, running longer, and you will be proud of yourself for sticking with it.”
Coach Corr said the same, “Consistency! Running is all about staying consistent. You may have hard days, or days you don’t want to get out the door and run, but it will get easier, and times will drop if you put the work in and stay consistent with your training.”
Before a big race, the coaches love to fuel up with their favorite meals. Corr shared, “I love a pasta with a great meat sauce and salad!”
Covert said, “Peanut butter on toast, an apple, and a blue Gatorade. Whether I’m running a 5k or a half marathon, this is my go-to breakfast before a race.”
Overall, Seattle Prep is so excited to welcome the new girl’s cross-country coaches. Aimee and Katy, we’ve got your shoe!
