Are you a long-time aficionado of anime or crochet? We have great news for you! Seattle Prep has introduced many new clubs this school year, including anime and crochet.
During an interview with the creators of anime club, seniors Kyle Hayes and Justin Nguyen, they explained that this addition has long been in the making: “Anime club is definitely a passion project, it’s something I wanted to do since my own sophomore year” said Nguyen.
Although anime could be seen as a genre only, Nguyen and Hayes view it as one’s means to share their own opinions and bring them to life in an enthusiastic way. This excitement mirrors their feelings for their new club. “It’s a really weird feeling. But having people who are interested in what I’m interested in, I’m really excited to figure out what’s next” said Nguyen.
“We’re trying to make a community and make it everlasting,” added co-founder Hayes. The purpose of this club is for students to meet with an open mind and share their common interests. Thanks to Nguyen and Hays’ time and effort, the anime club is off to a great start, and both hope that this success will continue even after they graduate.
Like the anime club, the crochet club was the idea of a passionate and committed Prep student. In an interview, the crochet club’s founder, Sophomore Sydney Wagner, stated that she had been thinking about this club since last year and that she is feeling both excited and intimidated by its opening. As the sophomore ASB President, Wagner hosted “crochet days” at school last year to find out the interest it had. She described these “crochet days” as an opportunity for her to gauge the students’ interest in crochet. It was soon such a success that Wagner began to think about creating a club to help the students advance their skills.
Wagner believes that her enjoyable hobby has real personal benefits. She finds that it can be an outlet for stress and bring creativity and satisfaction to many. “It’s very rewarding because you get to design and bring your own ideas to real life” said Wagner.
Although it took Wagner a long time to put together her club, it was very much worth it. She had to arrange scheduling and availability with many teachers, but she persevered and couldn’t be happier with how it has been going so far. She insists that the crochet club is a space for all skill levels, with the only goal of helping members get better at crocheting.
The popularity of her club has made Wagner’s vision expand, and now crocheting can be accessible to all Prep students and eventually be a tool to make homemade gifts for homeless shelters, retirement homes, Seattle Prep auctions, and friends and family as well.
Clubs at Seattle Prep are a large component of the community, and by making new clubs we further build connections and make new friends. Join a club if you have not already!
