As of September 23rd, three new members have joined the Seattle Prep ASB team. After a month-long election process, nine Freshmen candidates gave speeches during Lit Study on the 23rd, and the votes were in by Window period that afternoon.
The election process this year was different than that of years past. Due to the concern that traditional Prep elections put too much merit in students’ speeches alone, providing inadequate opportunity for candidates to convey how they would be valuable on ASB, Prep authorities decided to change things up. Authorities took advantage of the school year’s technological advancements by initiating an online voting process and creating a page, through the Seattle Prep Panther website, where candidates gave a statement about themselves and their goals if elected for student government.
After all the speeches, Mr. Stearns instructed all the Freshmen to check their Prep emails, to which he had sent a link to both the page of statements, and the virtual voting ballets. At Lit Study, students clicked, pondered, and voted.
By that afternoon, the results were in. The associated student body checked the polls at window and confirmed the three winners: Hudson Patterson (President), Angela Lin (Executive), and Will Forster (Executive). The new ASB members were announced on the intercom the following morning, and by lunch period Wednesday, they were in their first meeting. To learn more about your new freshman candidates and their goals, check out the Seattle Prep Panther website to find page of candidate statements.
The success of this year’s freshmen elections forecast a promising year for numerous reasons. The election process is improving to become fairer, virtual voting has proved effective, and perhaps most importantly, three strong student leaders will be joining the Prep ASB team.
