There are many people in the Prep hallways that play a sport, yet do not compete for Seattle Prep. Sometimes these athletes can be overlooked because they are not bleeding the Prep blue at their events; however, their accomplishments are something the Prep community should be very proud of.
Sophomore Avery Brown participates in the popular sport of crew for the Greenlake Crew Team. It is a huge commitment. Avery participates in crew 18 hours every week and comes home aching from tough workouts every day, yet she says “it’s totally worth it.”
This hard work has paid off in many ways, one being the things she has accomplished with her team. First, she ran her first 10K with the girls on her team and also came in either first or second of all of her races this year. In their best race of the year, Avery’s team came in second place and brought home silver from regionals just this month. Also, part of her team is moving on to nationals which makes her and all her teammates very proud.
Avery noted that because of crew “I am definitely a better person in every way…It’s the ultimate team sport, I love how everyone depends completely on each other.” She also said that though she loves the Prep community, she likes that crew is separate from all things Seattle Prep. She insightfully stated “I love that if I have a bad day at school I can go see the girls and guys on my team and forget about all the school stress.” Crew is a place where Avery finds space and a break from school and for this reason she said that does not hope Prep will ever get a crew team. She said that “it’s fun to have so many amazing friends that you see every day from 10 different schools. I like the diversity, and you get to meet a lot more people this way.”
Avery and all athletes outside of Seattle Prep should be honored for all of their achievements in their sport. They have all accomplished much and have a lot to be proud of in their various sports.
