Around The Horn:
BEN FARICY ’14 and The Sports Staff
Ben Faricy: Welcome to the first edition this year of Around the Horn. The first question is: As the major League baseball pennant race heats up who is your favorite to win it all, and why?
Brian Bowers: The Atlanta Braves are my pick for the 2013 world Series. They currently have the best record in the MLB and have a double digit lead in the NL East. They have shown consistency all year and I believe the Upton twins will lead them to the world Series.
BF: That is a good pick and Atlanta has arguably the best pitching staff in the entire MLB. 3 points for Brian.
John Ostrander: I believe that the St. Louis Cardinals will ride their starting pitching and clutch hitting into the post-season.
BF: St. Louis is good, but I think Pittsburg is too much of a threat to the Cardinals in the NL Central for them to make any real post season noise. 2 points for John.
Joe Chamberlin: I would say the Los Angeles Dodgers, who I think will benefit greatly from young talent Yasiel Puig.
BF: The Dodgers have had a solid season, but have struggled of late going 4-6 in their last ten games. This is the kind of momentum shift that usually results in a poor postseason run. Also you guys are missing points here by not picking the World Series bound Detroit Tigers. 2 points for Joe.
BF: The next question is: Johnny Manziel had an impressive performance in weeks one and two of the College football regular season. Is he the favorite to repeat as Heisman winner or will there be a dark horse Heisman winner?
BB: There is a lot of controversy about Johnny Manziel and his Frat-star personality this year. As long as Johnny Maziel does not get in any more trouble for his attitude I think he will be the clear favorite to win the Heisman this year, which would add even more to his ego.
BF: I agree with your points and also think he has the potential to repeat as Heisman winner if he keeps playing well. I believe in Johnny Football. 4 points.
JC: Manziel is definitely an impressive player. I think his attitude and performance in big games will have a big impact on his Heisman hopes. Not sure about a dark horse, but it’s not uncommon.
BF: I like your angle too Joe. His attitude could be a detriment for the Aggies this year as was seen week one when he was given a personal foul for taunting. 3.5 points.
BF: And the final question of the day is: Prep has some promising sports teams of its own this fall. Which team is most likely to bring home a state championship this fall?
BB: Of all Seattle Prep teams it is clear that the Football team will win state and bring home championship rings. Lead by Senior captains Jack Henning, Tim Bowers and council members Jack Iseman and Clayton Comisky the football team will shake off the disappointing loss to Roosevelt, beat Eastside and O’dea, Run the table and end Bellevue reign of championships in 3A.
BF: Excellent response. I agree that football will run the table and win state this year. Many critics may point out that Bellevue was ranked the number one team in the nation last year and is even more competitive this year. However, the heart of the Prep team this year is unmatched. They will shock the nation. 6 points.
JO: Women’s soccer because they have won two state titles in the last three years and senior Mary Ann Santucci is one of the top Seniors in the state.
BF: Also a great pick. The soccer team should have another phenomenal year; however the football team seems a little more promising right now. 4 points.
BF: Brian Bowers is the winner today! Here is his facetime.
BB To avenge the 2005 Super Incident, the Seahawks will destroy the NFC West and win the superbowl. After destroying both the Denver Bronco’s (in pre-season) and the 49ers who were the 2 teams ahead of the Seahawks in pre-season rankings no other teams will come close to comparing to the seahawks. Lead by our Lord and savior Russel Wilson and Marshawn Lynch our offense will put up points in the triple digits backed by the 12th man.
