For most of us, skiing is just a fun winter activity but for Max Hill, it’s a way to make a difference. This senior has spent the past two years volunteering for Outdoors for All, using his passion for the slopes to help children with disabilities experience the joy of skiing.
The Outdoors for All Foundation is well known for winer season instruction like snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross country, and downhill skiing. The nonprofit offers many other activities like cycling, hiking, kayaking, water skiing, and many others. Each year Outdoors for All assists more than 2,400 children and adults with disabilities to exercise their abilities with the help of volunteers like Hill.
Hill serves as a ski instrucor. Hill first became involved in this program to fulfil his junior service requirements. He opted to continue volunteering because of how much he enjoyed it. Serving as a ski instructor is a commitment, Hill goes up every Sunday during the ski season to teach kids how to ski. This past season he went up eight times.
Hill first started volunteering for Outdoors for All to fulfill his junior service needs but chose to continue to volunteer. After being asked why he likes volunteering and why he continues to volunteer, Hill replied, “It was a lot of fun. I made meaningful connections with a welcoming and supportive community.”
When asked what he would say to somebody considering taking on a more active role in volunteer work, Hill advised, “Find something you really enjoy and pursue it to help others.”
Hill took his own advice using his passion for skiing to help connect with others. Max Hill’s clear dedication to volunteering highlights how social justice is not just about advocacy, it’s about action. Hill is helping promote inclusivity for all, breaking down barriers, ensuring everyone has the chance to experience the joy of skiing. Hill is a reminder of how social justice starts with the action of individuals who are willing and determined to make a difference.
