In hopes to deepen a sense of community at Prep, the administration has decided to prohibit off-campus lunches indefinitely. Though this is a controversial issue between students and staff, it has been confirmed and will be implemented in a few weeks.
A board member, Teresa Mendez added, “It is in the best interest of our students socially and academically.”
There are three main reasons motivating this transition: safety, timeliness, and inclusiveness. Regarding safety, students will no longer face the pressure of rushing around the Seattle area to get back to class on time. This will reduce the probability of speeding and potential accidents.
“I am thrilled to finally have all my students settled in on time and ready to go,” theology teacher Mrs. Jacobs exclaimed. Secondly, this rule will help in reducing the amount of tardies students receive. Eating lunch at school is a simple alternative to going off campus and will help students make full use of their class periods.
Overall, while there are more students sharing a meal in one place it will inevitably build stronger bonds between peers. This will help to prevent cliques and ensure all students feel included. Prep is community focused and intends to nurture that sense of unity while requiring students to stay on campus.
Despite the staff’s approval of this transition, it is expected to infuriate the majority of the student body. Sophomore Elizabeth Morales stated, “I have been looking forward to going off campus for the past two years but now I feel like that luxury was stripped away and I will miss out on fun memories because of it.”
Junior Joseph Hugh stated, “I’m not even sure how logical it is. How will they supply that much food for everyone? Will students spend their whole lunch waiting in bigger lines for food?”
Senior Jessica Wheeler protested, “This is a monstrosity and I’m so beyond angry. We have a right to eat lunch where we want to!”
Though this decision appears to be controversial, it will prioritize students’ education, safety, and friendships. Updates on policy will be emailed to the student body as soon they are finalized.
