Switching on Mario Kart
Mario Kart has been a staple Olympic Week Event for many years, and 2018 did not disappoint. The Seattle Prep Olympic Week rendition of Mario Kart is different from most games, because it is played on the Nintendo Switch.
“This adds an extra element to my training”, remarked Todd Hamblet ‘20. “I’ve been accustomed to playing on the Wii my whole life so the switch could be hard to play on.”
When asked about the most important skill in Mario Kart, Hamblet said, “mental toughness is a huge part of Mario Kart, especially when you are in first place and get hit with a banana peel that knocks you back to fourth. Perseverance is key.”
Olympic Week showcased the best school wide talent in energetic and intense games. Among many close contests, Father Rallanka, the first-year Priest at Prep, came into the games viewed as an underdog by many, but clearly not by himself. In the dying seconds of his semi-finals race, Rallanka turned the corner on his opponent to barely win by fractions of a second. In the final match, however, “Rainbow Road” proved difficult for Rallanka as he fell to the senior class contestant Hudson Patterson.
