The Seattle Prep Jazz Band is on a roll this year. After taking first place at the Bainbridge High School Jazz Festival, the ensemble shows no signs of slowing down. With their spring concert set for May 4 in the Seattle Prep Theater, the band is ready to bring its signature energy and talent to the school community.
“There are no vocals—it’s all about the music,” explained Leo Jarjour ’26, who plays piano in the band. Alongside him is Joe McDonald ’26, a former guitarist who recently switched to bass. “I’ve only been playing bass for about four months,” McDonald said, “but because of my guitar experience, I picked it up pretty fast.”
For some, performing in front of a crowd can be nerve-wracking. But for Jarjour and McDonald, it’s nothing but excitement. “It’s definitely not stressful,” Jarjour said. “Playing music is just fun, especially when you’re doing it with your classmates.”
The band meets during the school day and performs three to four times a year. While jazz can seem intimidating, both students emphasized that anyone with an interest in music should consider joining. “You don’t need to know anything about jazz to join,” McDonald said. “You just need to know how to play an instrument and be open to learning.”
Jarjour admitted he wasn’t always sold on the idea. “I was initially planning to transfer out,” he said. “But I decided to give it an honest try, and after the first couple of classes, I was really happy I stayed.”
One of the most exciting aspects of Jazz Band is that every student gets a chance to shine. “A cool part of Jazz Band is everyone gets to perform a solo,” McDonald said.
The man behind it all is Mr. Weeks, who became director of the Jazz Band two years ago. With two degrees in jazz, Weeks said he was thrilled when the opportunity arose to lead the group. “I love jazz music,” he said. “It’s also a great counterbalance to my choir life.”
Looking ahead, Weeks hopes to grow the program even further. “I want to expand the group and eventually make it a yearlong class,” he said. “If you join, you can expect to learn how to improvise, play the music in an authentic way, and explore jazz history.”
With a talented roster, an inspiring teacher, and a shared passion for music, the Seattle Prep Jazz Band is hitting all the right notes. Their upcoming spring concert promises not only great music but a showcase of dedication and creativity.
