Seattle Prep’s Video Club, moderated Mr. Othman, is a window activity formed to let students make videos and develop their video making skills in a variety of ways. The club was created informally out of student interest three years ago, and then was made into a formal window activity for the last two years. It has around twelve members who regularly attend, who are mainly students who have taken video production in the past. These students enjoy film making and wish to continue their growth in the area. Says moderator Mr. Othman “It is a great chance for students to share their knowledge of making films.”
Students participating in video club make films both individually and in groups, and for a variety of purposes. The video club makes videos for the school, including promotional videos and videos for Earth Week, and videos for Olympic Week and service.
In addition to making films to help the school, the club submitted a video to the film festival NFFTY. NFFTY stands for National Film Festival for Talented Youth, and it is a film festival which is held in Seattle annually in the spring. The festival is only open to films whose directors age twenty-two or under, so it is a great opportunity for younger video makers to show their talent to a large audience. The festival has grown from its beginning in 2007 to become a large event, with thousands of attendants and hundreds of submissions. The videos that are accepted come from more than twenty states and twenty-five countries, and are premiered at the festival.
The Seattle Prep Video Club has had one film accepted to the festival already, and looks forward to more in the future. The Video Club is a great opportunity for students of all levels to express their artistic side, while at the same time helping the school and showing the world their talent.
