Cooney, Cruz-Vanegas and Kent win awards in 2018 WJEA Write-Off Contests.

Yesterday, members of The Panther journalism program attended the Washington Journalism Education Association state conference and competition.
As part of conference, students participated in “write-off” contests where they watched a short press conference or presentation and were then tasked with writing an article about what they had heard.
Five students competed and three were honored with awards:
-Walid Cruz-Vanegas ’20 participated in the Newspaper Feature Article Writing contest and was given an Honorable Mention award for his article.
-Emma Cooney ’18 participated in the Newswriting contest and was given an Excellent award for her article. In this contest, this was the highest award given and only one other writer matched Cooney’s achievement.
-Moses Kent ’19 participated in the Editorial Cartooning contest and was given the highest honor of Superior for his cartoon. Kent was the only contestant to receive this rating in the contest.
Upon winning his award, Kent jumped over a row of chairs and dabbed on-stage at the awards ceremony. He said he wanted to “liven things up.”
